Defeat Diabetes

Defeat Diabetes has commissioned a clinical research study on how the use of a smartphone app can help patients manage their type 2 diabetes. La Trobe University is investigating the effects of using the Defeat Diabetes app to implement a low carb diet and lifestyle changes to improve glycaemic control over a 12-month period.

The participants are nominated by their GPs, who also review changes to their bio-markers over the course of the research period.  Below is the case study of research participant Mr B. 

 

Background

  • Male 34 years old
  • Sedentary office worker
  • New diagnosis T2DM, strong family history
  • Hispanic background
  • Currently on no medications
  • Asymptomatic – abnormal glucose tests picked up on hospital a admission for renal colic
  • Marked ‘Fatty Liver” on discharge

 

Management options for Mr B: Lifestyle and/or medications

  • Lifestyle 
    • Traditional dietary approach
    • Offer remission via Defeat Diabetes low carb approach
  • Medication
    • Metformin
    • ? Dual therapy
  • How do we decide? 

 

Progress over time

  • Achieved T2D remission without prescribed medication
  • Highly motivated due to a strong family history of T2D
  • Received low carbohydrate dietary advice from GP at diagnosis
  • Support provided from a friend who was familiar with ketogenic diet
