Dear colleagues,
We’re facing a health crisis that can no longer be ignored.
New figures from Diabetes Australia show the real cost of type 2 diabetes has exploded: $9.1 billion annually. That’s nearly three times the previous estimate. Every five minutes, another Australian is diagnosed. And if nothing changes, 3.6 million Australians could be living with diabetes by 2050.
We are all aware of the burden this places on the system and, more importantly, on your patients.
The case for prevention is overwhelming. We know that up to 58% of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes. And yet, while Australia has launched successful public health campaigns for melanoma and breast cancer, diabetes remains under-recognised and under-resourced.
It’s time that changed.
Prevention is powerful and within our reach
As health professionals, we’re in a unique position. We see the early signs of metabolic dysfunction every day. But too often, we’re left with limited options: prescribe a medication, refer to a dietitian, hope for the best.
That’s why I founded the Defeat Diabetes Program: to give doctors another tool. A practical, affordable and evidence-based approach that addresses the root cause of insulin resistance.
This is not a theory. It’s working. And the evidence is growing.
A proven solution — backed by research
A recent study conducted by La Trobe University and published in Nutrients confirms what we’ve seen in practice: a digital, low carb lifestyle intervention works. Fast.
After just three months on the Defeat Diabetes Program:
- 52% of participants reduced their HbA1c to non-diabetic levels
- 85% improved glycaemic control
- Average HbA1c dropped by 1%, lowering the risk of devastating complications
- Participants lost an average of 4.9 kg
- 32% reduced their diabetes medications and many were able to stop medications altogether
And these results were sustained at the six month mark also.
This is nutritional therapy in action. It’s accessible, affordable, scalable and sustainable.
It’s time to act
The $9.1 billion cost is just the start. Behind that number are millions of Australians - real people - at risk of heart disease, stroke, amputation and vision loss, outcomes you can help prevent.
We need national investment in prevention, yes. But we also need to act at a grassroots level in your clinics, with your patients, today.
If you’re ready to do more than manage type 2 diabetes, if you want to help your patients change their trajectory, the Defeat Diabetes Program is ready to support you.
Together, we can move from crisis to control.
Warm regards,
Dr Peter Brukner OAM
